STYLE GUIDE FOR AUSTRALIANA CONTRIBUTORS

These guidelines are to help authors to format their articles uniformly for publication in Australiana. Stick to them as best you can, but don't be put off if it looks too hard; we'll fix it up anyway. We are here to help you, so just click on editor if you need help and we'll advise you.

Australiana is published quarterly in February, May, August and November. So we can plan better, please send us a brief summary of your proposed submission, or contact the Editors to discuss it. You can submit articles at any time, but if you want it published in a specific issue then contact the Editors to discuss deadlines.

Submissions should be original. Length can vary, but try to keep it concise.

Contributions consist of three essential parts:

  • text, preferably in electronic format
  • illustrations numbered consecutively 01, 02, 03... and
  • captions  numbered consecutively 01, 02, 03...

The editors reserve the right to check information and consult other experts, to add or delete material, to add references, and to add or delete illustrations in the interests of ensuring accuracy, completeness, relevance and readability. Authors are sent a pdf or printout for checking accuracy before publication.

TEXT

  1. Format: text should be in Microsoft Word, single spaced, A4 page size, Australian English, with no fancy formatting. Do not embed pictures in the text.
  2. Electronic format: email articles to johnwade@iprimus.com.au or info@australiana.org
  3. ,
or mail articles on disk or CD
  4. Print-outs: hard copy must be scanned so we prefer high quality, single-spaced copies on one side of A4 paper with numbered pages. Keep a copy.
  5. Italics: italicise titles of works of art, books, periodical titles and technical terms in a foreign language
  6. Quotations: Direct quotes should be in single quotation marks, and for quotations within them use double quotation marks
  7. Dates: use the form 'day, month, year' e.g. 18 July 1972. In footnotes, abbreviate months (Jan, Feb, Mar, etc). Spell out the name of the century in full at the beginning of a sentence, e.g. 'Nineteenth century', elsewhere use a number, e.g. 19th century. In an adjectival context insert a hyphen, e.g. in 19th-century style
  8. Ellipses: show an ellipse by three dots with a space either side, e. g. '… his … work'
  9. Notes: use 'endnotes' in Microsoft Word. Number notes 1,2,3 ... and place at the end of the text (not at thefoot of each page). Superscript numbers in the text should follow punctuation. Avoid too many, long and irrelevant notes
  10. References: Acknowledge all materials derived from another source in footnotes. Use these formats:
    Books:
John Hawkins, Nineteenth Century Australian Silver, Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1990, vol 1, p 234
Articles in periodicals: Marjorie Graham, ‘Every picture tells a story’, Australian Antique Collector, vol 47, Jan-June 1994, pp 59-62
Manuscripts: Give the title of the manuscript, name of the institution and reference number, e. g. Philip Gidley King, ‘Letter Book 1797-1806’, Mitchell Library A201
    Subsequent references
: use abbreviations op. cit., ibid., etc as appropriate
Internet: quote the web page and date accessed, e.g. www.australiana.org/mag 125 Sep 2006
  11. Numbers: write numbers up to ten in words, with higher numbers in Arabic numerals, e.g. ‘from seven to 16 books’.
  12.  Use separators for thousands, i.e. 2,500 (not not for dates).
  13. Names: give first names in addition to surnames at first mention. Do not insert a space between initials in names, e.g.' J.D. Lang' not ' J. D. Lang'
  14. Abbreviations: use a full stop only where the last letter is not the last letter of the word, e.g. no., vol., p., pp.
  15. but not nos, vols, Dr
  16. Measurements: metric measurements use singular abbreviations without full stops e.g. cm, kg. Non-metric equivalents may follow in brackets
  17. Spelling: please set your language to 'English (Australian)'
